After a long break of seven years, the mixture of real-time strategy and roll-up play from Germany goes into the next round. Already on the 7th of December, THQ plans to release Nordic Spellforce 3. After this year’s Gamescom date we are once again good things that not only fans of the old parts should reserve the title, but also those who like to lose themselves in beautifully built game worlds.
Description of the game
Two topics were on the agenda at the GC date: the roll-up game system and the real-time strategy battles – that is Spellforce 3‘s main components. To the former, we were presented with a main mission in which our four heroes are in search of a missing person. At the end, the order was rather secondary. The developers wanted to show us how much the city was built and how atmospheric it was. Not only do hundreds of passers-by walk along the narrow streets of the relatively large settlements, but also any buildings appear as if the NPCs really lived there. The houses were varied, so that the settlement presented to us was really credible.
Story of game
Why the main mission was a little forgotten, were the many side quests, which can be done in the city. The special thing about the additional tasks is that they do not have a few game aids as opposed to the campaigns. In a sidequest we asked for, for example, to collect certain ingredients for a potion. Instead of simply slipping down the points shown on the minimap, we must come up with the idea of finding spider or garlic. For the main quests, however, the developers promise to help, so that the essential missions can be done without any problems.
The second point of the GC presentation revolves around the real-time battles. Here the developers have taken the criticism of Beta to heart and made sure that the three factions (elves, humans and orcs) actually play differently. For example, people have advantages when they are in their own territory, while orcs benefit when they are in a hostile sector. Sectors? Exactly, with Spellforce, a sector-based combat system comes into play. Through conquered areas we get new workers and thus the possibility to build new buildings. The real-time strategy quests can be done by the way with the hero group only. This may be virtually impossible with many of the assignments, but the developers want to make the transition from an RPG quest to a real-time strategy fight so that the player himself does not notice it – that is to provide for a greater immersion. Otherwise, Grimlore Games wants to do every real-time combat with varied tasks, so that no player thinks that one always only skirmish skirmishes.
We have seen, for example, a mission in which we must defend a tribe against the Medusa. The tribe has built an energy barrier to ward off the enemies. But the barrier must be supplied with energy, for which we must collect resources. Although the mission is not automatically lost when the magical wall collapses, however, according to the developers without a strong army, we may not have the greatest
You can, of course, again level your heroes bit by bit, distributing attribute points. There are seven skill trees with which you can specialize in a certain area. Each acquired ability can be upgraded, thereby not only increasing but also giving additional effects. In general, the RTS gameplay has become more important, but how much the importance of your heroes will be, has not yet been clarified.
