Another production of the Polish Bloober Team, this time being a psychedelic horror movie. During the game we play an insane painter trying to finish work on his life. The gameplay is based on traversing subsequent locations of the house, which changes under the influence of the artist’s vision. Layers of Fear is the first horror film produced by the Bloober Team in Krakow for PC Windows. Production collides with the theme of madness and painting, creating a psychedelic, overcrowded, heavy experience. The creators combine the treatments typical of the classic film genre with solutions that bring to mind the Amnesia series as well as Antichamber, Dear Esther and Gone Home.
Description of the game
In the game we play the character of a painter living in the nineteenth century and want to finish his great work. However, the hero is struggling with psychic problems, so traversing his possessions – in order to find suitable ingredients to create the opus magnum opus – quickly becomes a chaotic and incomprehensible journey through the mind of the artist. Have taken place in the past. The story is not linear, and the notion of its course gives us an opportunity to observe phenomena taking place in the house, reading memoirs scattered around the residence or listening to the hero’s memories. We observe the action from the first person perspective, and the game is based on the exploration of the various areas of the property and interact with the various objects. This system resembles the solution used in Amnesia: The Dark Madness, guiding our actions so that a small target is a pretext for a longer, paranormal travel filled. The Bloober Team also tried to diversify into small logical and arcane sequences, which from time to time will be on our way, making crossing more diverse.
Story of game
During play on Windows PC we can use many items, open cabinets, chests or doors, and read the materials here and there. The game does not allow the use of weapons or other means of defense against dangers and does not operate any indicators, but allows confrontation with harassing heroes, which can lead to a kind of “death.” The tension gradually builds up sometimes out of fear. The tempo of the game also gives a dynamically changing environment, whose appearance, condition and layout are constantly incompatible with the laws of transformation, often forcing us to verify the direction we want to follow. Layers of Fear on PC Windows uses the Unity 3D engine, which has the potential to be used to create detailed, site-rich details. In order to dampen the atmosphere of production, the creators have given the player a network of not very spacious rooms and narrow corridors, skillfully operating their subdued lighting or using appropriate color saturation. The character of the hero – an imposing Victorian-style building – is filled with disturbing images, most of which have been painted specifically for the game. The engine shows its capabilities especially at times when individual rooms – as a result of the artist’s hallucination – deform or fall under the laws of physics, often accompanied by a wealth of molecular effects or suggestive filters. The accompanying soundtrack, filled with classical music, also provides the accompanying mood. In addition to it, you can hear characteristic piano adventures or gramophone-era entertainment. The last few months have been great changes in the Bloober Team. Krakow studio after a few unsuccessful productions strengthened a number of new employees and modified the direction of development. Now the developer wants to go to more or less horror-related games. The first project to showcase the new face of Bloober Team is Layers of Fear. If later it will only be better, now I can not wait for the next production of Cracow studio. Layers of Fear starts at a certain house.
In addition to the main character there is no one there. Nothing is happening either. You can look into the cabinets or see an object, but a lot of attractions are not there. Only after finding the key to one of the rooms, the action takes momentum. We learn that the protagonist is a painter, and that of course must prepare a new image. But this will be unique. This is what the script is about. Layers of Fear is not only a very good horror, but also an interesting story. However, the game does not translate much. Only “licking” walls can be found various records. They step by step explain what happened to the main character and his family. This kind of narrative makes history demanding. It is easy to overlook some information stigma that might explain the situation a bit. So remember that Layers of Fear is a game for quiet exploration. The rush is definitely not indicated. However, the writers did not find it easy at all to tell stories so that everything had hands and feet. However, it will be appreciated mainly by those who do not decide on speed run. The script from the beginning, mainly due to many understatements, aroused my interest. Sam was curious how it all would end and I admit that I am satisfied with the finale. The creators could opt for another, more obvious final storyline. For that, you should definitely be positive. Layers of Fear is, above all, a horror film. The gameplay is very linear. Some of these productions say “simulator cameraman”. In the game you can not die, so theoretically so terrible it should not. But this is only a pretense. Placing an action in one home also does not mean that you are missing locations to visit. Shortly after you start playing Layers of Fear, things are hard to describe. For example, when entering the room it is not said that after turning around everything will look the same. This is one of the main themes in Layers of Fear. Rooms are constantly changing. Total paranoia Sometimes the reversal itself can be terrible, because it is unknown what appeared behind the squares.
